BPD at Stockholm 08
BPD is attending Stockholm World Water Week in August. In addition to staffing an exhibition stand, we are co-convening two seminar sessions:
Making Regulation Work for the Poor: Accelerating Access to Water and Sanitation
BPD, GTZ, WSP and AFD are co-convening to present this vital issue. A series of presenters and panellists will be debating four controversial statements:
- Regulators have little impact on improving access for the poor
- Tariff regulation is more relevant to richer communities than poor ones
- The regulator should directly engage informal providers
- Consumer voice mechanisms are beyond the reach of the poor
We shall be hearing stories from the Philippines, Tanzania and Zambia, as well as a range of wider experience from the audience and others. Please come and add you voice to the debate.
Date: Tuesday 19th August
From: 13h30 – 17h00
Room: T5
Impending Disaster or Strategic Opportunity? Small Town Sanitation - It's a Big Issue
See seminar flyer and agenda here! (pdf)
BPD, WaterAid and IWA are co-hosting this session. Rather than in the large ‘megacities’ that dominate the headlines, the majority of rapid urban growth in developing countries is in small and medium towns. While existing infrastructure is typically sparse, the small size and lower density of small towns provides a window of opportunity for proactive intervention.
Come hear about the known knowns, known unknowns and unknowns unknowns of this crucial topic. We look forward to hearing your views, as do the Gates Foundation, IIED, PsEau and PDM who are there to listen too.
Date: Thursday 21st August
From: 13h30 – 17h00
Room: K22/23
If you would like more information, before or after the sessions, please do email us.
